New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity
Hurricanes Katrina and Rita forced many musicians to flee New Orleans. Jazz, blues, and other genres that are the city’s musical score, cannot return until the musicians return. Facing rising housing costs, a shortage of decent units, and a national mortgage crisis, the Musicians’ Village is providing local musicians and other qualifying partner families the opportunity to own a home in a thriving community of committed individuals and families. Conceived by Harry Connick, Jr. and Branford Marsalis, the Musicians’ Village will consist of 70 single-family, Habitat-constructed homes and 10 rental units for the older “music masters” of New Orleans. Its centerpiece will be the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music, dedicated to the music education and development of homeowners and others who will live nearby.

Several weeks ago, I appeared as a guest with the Back Seat Producers. In the episode just released today, we discussed horror at length. So to the people who may be coming from that . . . experience, welcome. I had a blast being on there and look forward to going back as often as they will permit.

While browsing my updates on Twitter, I came across a blog post written by Liz Strauss. She lays out a six step process to help individuals build their own personal developmental network. I think that this guide is useful for not only members of the Astral Audio Productions cast, but for those who read what is posted here on a regular basis. So go show Liz some comment “love” if you find the steps appropriate; I hope they will motivate you as they have motivated me.

For several months, I have been working on a project; a sound file that would represent the Astral Realm. It is quite large and clocks in over an hour. I would categorize it as an ambient piece; not something to listen to unless you wanted to relax or the like. With that being said, I would like to turn it into something completely different. Instead of me modifying and tweaking the audio design, I am going to give you the opportunity to work your magic.

If you are familiar with sound design, sound editing, or are a composer, I want to hear from you. The way I want this project to work is simple. Give you the file to do as you please (as long as it fits the general idea which I will discuss later in this post), pass that file to someone else to repeat the process, and so on; the final result being presented to the listeners and readers. All collaborators will be given proper credit. Ideally, this piece would be CD length and segmented for use in the Astral Audio Experience.

Guidelines

1. Any additional sounds, loops, or user generated material should fall under the Creative Commons license or be royalty-free. (The final result will be podsafe.)

2. The file should remain  in the wav format until the final person mixes/edits it.

3. All additions will be sent via email to the email address specified at the end of this post.

4. While artists will have creative control over what goes into the file, it would be appreciated if musical tendencies are not heavily relied upon. The final product is to represent what the Astral Realm sounds like; therefore, this should have more of an other worldly and organic feel. Exceptions to the music would include drones and percussion elements.

5. Artists should keep in mind that we are looking for a somewhat dark atmosphere. Personally, the darker the better. However, it should be able to engage the listener with proverbial twists and multi-layered subtleties.

6. In the segmented version, listeners should be able to receive a different experience when the tracks are shuffled and randomly played.

7. A deadline will be determined once the group is formed.

8. This project is completely volunteer.

9. Have fun.

In some hours time, the current hq where I work on Astral Audio projects will be disconnected from the world. No phone. No cable. No internet. The move to Mississippi is happening this weekend. We may be without net access for several weeks. In that time, I will finish up the current episode and work on scripts for future plot developments. The original plan was to send out Astral Audio Extra episodes via a timed schedule; however, this won’t be possible. You hate them with a passion. They ruin your oh so wonderful fan experience at your favorite sporting event. And sometimes, those dreaded delays threaten all that is good and entertaining in your listening experience of a podcast. You want episodes out on time, (or at least in a timely manner), but it happens all the same. Astral Audio Productions is having to halt production of the current episode of Astral Audio Experience with what-will-be Hurricane Gustov knocking at the door. As a precaution, I am possibly relocating to Mississippi to wait until the storm moves a safe distance from my current home base. But if you want to hear me blabber away and get grilled, check out the Shameless Plugcast this sunday. I had fun being interviewed by Zack Daggy, and you might learn something new about the Astral Audio Experience that you didn’t know beforehand. Auditions are still being taken until September 5th. With luck, I should be back on track and get to working on the episode which should be released the weekend of September 14th. Astral Audio: Update 1

This is the first of many updates you will recieve in our effort to keep you up to date with the latest goings on in Astral Audio Productions. We are shooting for 3-5 a week, and Astral Audio Extra episodes will be released on weekends as a sort of round up. Then once or twice a month (depending on how fast they can be produced), Astral Audio Experience episodes will be submitted for your listening pleasure.

The Case of The Pitcher’s Pendant: A Billibub Baddings Mystery and Digital Magic

Astral Audio Productions will give you hourly updates on the Amazon run of podcasting’s Dynamic Duo in audio format. At 8:00 AM Pacific Time, we will begin the day with the launch and give you the links to purchase the books. (The post might show up early so you can buy on the dot.) This is so we can push them up the charts and help them get noticed. So let’s help Double Trouble! (Maybe we should give them the theme like on the tv show eh?)

A little over two weeks ago, a 47-year-old man died of pancreatic cancer. No doubt, he wouldn’t want to be remembered for being another statistic. The fame that enveloped him for months before his death seemed to invigorate him, but who was this man who inspired millions? Randy Pausch was a geek, a family man, a motivated son, and former professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. He gave a now infamous lecture on how to achieve your childhood dreams. It was this lecture that I showed to the cast of Astral Audio Productions, and it is fitting that we start our motivational series with a man who made his dreams come true. Carnegie Mellon University has a nice press release that is a fitting tribute to Randy; it can be found here. Below is the full 76 minute lecture he gave to a packed audience last September. It is a must watch. Take notes; I sure did when I first experienced it. His story can be our story. His legacy can be taken up by those who are impacted by the principles he presents. If you want to donate for cancer research, there are two ways you can do so. (This is also mentioned in the press release, but I feel it is worth repeating here.) The family requests that donations on his behalf be directed to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, 2141 Rosecrans Ave., Suite 7000, El Segundo, CA 90245, or to Carnegie Mellon’s Randy Pausch Memorial Fund ( www.cmu.edu/giving/pausch ), which primarily supports the university’s continued work on the Alice project.

Astral Audio Extra: Episode 7

This episode, we feature four tracks by G Tom Mac from his most recent album. He is the guy who wrote and performed “Cry Little Sister” from the 1987 vampire flick, Lost Boys. He has given Astral Audio Productions permission to use the lyrics of that song as a plot device in Astral Audio Experience. What do we have planned? I won’t say.  He might even help with the writing process so we do his song justice. You’ll just have to stay tuned to find out what we have in store eh? This post by J.C. Hutchins brings up some valid points and prompts me to lay out a more detailed mission statement of Astral Audio Productions. While a podcast is currently our main product, it is only the bait, (or more accurately, one form of bait), that grabs your attention. When I started thinking of what I wanted this place to represent, what I wanted to accomplish, and furthermore, how to achieve those goals, I knew that I wanted to be outside the box. I wanted to incorporate the things I enjoy into what I do and produce. The short answer is that Astral Audio Productions is here to entertain, inform, instruct, and inspire the community that is built through interaction.

Let’s break it all down and remove the curtain and explain just how this has started. Since I love the whole concept of audio dramas, I started producing one. I listened to several established productions. I already had a basic storyline in mind. (It was something I had put on the back burner for years.) I already had a grasp of how to produce the podcast side of things thanks to my many conversations with Scott Sigler and research. I invested in the tools necessary to produce a good quality show. I sought volunteer actors that would be up to the task of bringing characters to life. But all of this made Astral Audio Productions no different than your standard podcasted audio drama.

That brought me back to the “outside the box” concept. We have podcasts that fill a certain niche. Some like music. Some like audio dramas or storytelling. Why not combine the two? Couldn’t you build a world around the whole “broadcast” archetype? We’ve proven, (so far), that you can blend these forms of entertainment together. I personally am an eclectic fan of music. I knew that I didn’t want to just play one genre for [you] the listeners. Also, since I was still volunteering my time for a radio dj, I wanted to meld that into the final product. While that last part has been slow going, we are going to be introducing more and more segments from the broadcasted radio show as time permits.

To further blend reality with fiction, Astral Audio Productions will be doing two things to generate interest. First, with Scott Sigler using maps to show his listeners the locations in his book, we see this as something we can do with the Astral Audio Experience whenever there are scenes that reference actual locations here in our world. And speaking of referencing, this brings me to the second way; using current events whenever possible. I won’t say how necessarily, but I will say that you might want to watch the news more or research online for some of the things we dredge up for content. And for the record, we won’t be taking a pro candidate stance if we happen to reference a political story; this is entertainment after all.

Is there more that could be done? Yes. The above strategies aren’t ground breaking in their scope, but they are a start. The small network that has been built as a result of the formation of Astral Audio Productions allows us to do more than simply give you a podcast. We can teach you how we do what we do which would hopefully inspire you to participate. This means that you soon will be seeing tutorials on the writing, performing, producing, and marketing aspects. Also, we will present motivational videos that will help you become more than just a dreamer, but a doer. We want an inspired and active community of fans that will come back to us whenever possible. And not only do we want to show you how to do something, we want to examine what inspires elements of the Astral Audio Experience; namely, what inspires certain settings, plots, and characters. What better way than by profiling books, movies, and other sources that we come across in the research/writing process.

Even though none of us are paid, we are a production company; we invest our time and effort. We hope to be as transparent and as engaging as Hutchins suggests. After all, the tag line is, “we are more than just a podcast; we are an interactive podcasting experience.” You experience the fruits of our labor, and in time, we hope that you will take the various tools we provide and use them to your advantage. This isn’t a one-sided deal. We will want your input so we can improve the quality of our work.

Astral Audio Extra: Episode 6

In this episode of Astral Audio Extra, we highlight the Alternative Rock group Cowboy Mouth who hail from New Orleans by playing six of their songs. We also wish Jace Edwards Happy Birthday; the band selection is thanks to his time spent in the Crescent City. We update you on why I posted the cult horror film Phenomena directed by Dario argento a few days ago in what will be a recurring feature. Astral Audio Experience: Episode 6 is knocking at the door; a few more script tweaks, and then the cast will play. And speaking of the cast, Astral Audio Productions welcomes Mark Bruzee, (of Darker Projects fame), to the family. He has been involved  with such hits as Night Terrors, the Sword of Windsor, Generation 1, Dark Matter, Star Trek: Lost Fronteer, the parsec nominated The Falcon Banner, among others.
